Overshare

When Lainie wrote the piece “Overshare” for Sideband a couple of years ago, it was a nervous time for her, personally and professionally, and for the country politically. She coded up a piece that made a sonic space for performers to share our personal and collective anxieties in a performative way that’d maybe take the private fear and sting out of each individual anxious thought. It was a kind of lava-flow file-share-y melting of recorded worry-statements using live vocoding over acoustic recordings of carrier instruments.

When Paula got wind of it, she took it one step deeper. Using the super cool MIDI-programmable organ at Wesleyan U, she found the pitches in the worry-recordings themselves and created a "score" from the spectral profile of each worry. Lainie's passion for tender, idiosyncratic vocoding, come alive in Paula's gorgeous new form!

Now we ask you to join in!

Paula has created the piece as a long-term installation and you can help create the piece itself by emailing us a sound recording of either

[1] a worry you have, small or large, spoken aloud and/or

[2] a sung drone (around a C if you feel so inclined)

Email either or both of these sonic offerings to: oversharesound [at] gmail [dot] com

Then we'll add your voice, your worry, your offering to the piece. NOTE: Please don't send video – video is kind of a pain to deal with for this. PLEASE FURTHER NOTE: No one listening to the piece will hear the semantic content of your worry – only you will know those words. We'll all hear the spectral profile of your worries played by the Wesleyan organ. Be as frank and vulnerable as your heart moves you to be <3

If you'd like to listen to the installation version of Overshare,

Paula has created a livestream, embedded below!

Please feel free to spread the word to friends and family who you feel would get love and support from this piece,

but for now please don't post about Overshare on social media.

THANK YOU <3
